The leaders of the future will be those who dare to claim their irrelevance in the contemporary world as a divine vocation that allows them to enter into a deep solidarity with the anguish underlying all the glitter of success, and to bring the light of Jesus there.

Henri Nouwen, In The Name of Jesus

I wish I could believe that this is an accurate description of future leaders. It seems like technology defines relevance today. And as quickly as technology changes, relevance can be lost. Perhaps those who can use technology and social media without becoming entrapped, entangled, enmeshed by it will be able to speak to the mass of people who use it precisely because they feel so irrelevant without it.

The world around us is saying in a loud voice, ‘We can take care of ourselves…We are in control. And if we are not, then we have to work harder to get in control. The problem is not lack of faith, but lack of competence…We no longer need spiritual answers to practical questions.’

Henri Nouwen - In The Name of Jesus

This quote stopped me in my tracks, as I am often more concerned about developing my competence than faith. It’s the whole earthly/spiritual, dying/eternal duality all over again.

New-ish Job

Still digging my new-ish job at American Bible Society. My favorite part is collaborating with people who have way more talents and way different talents than me. The stuff that we all produce together is so much better than what any one of us could produce alone, and that’s an energizing process.

Yes, it has meant fewer posts on the blog, Facebook, and Twitter. And I can’t promise I’ll get more prolific anytime soon. But in case anyone is wondering, work has been fun lately.
